About Me
A 1999 graduate of Brookline High School in Brookline, MA and a 2003 magna cum laude graduate of Wellesley College, I spent several years coordinating faculty searches in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University before I began tutoring full time. I scored an 800 SAT Verbal and have both tutored and written mock exams for test-prep companies since 2006. From 2008 to 2010, I was the principal SAT and ACT writer for WilsonPrep, a test-prep firm in Chappaqua, NY that has received national recognition from media outlets such as Family Circle Magazine, ABC News, Time Magazine, and The New York Times.
I currently tutor SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT Verbal, as well as French and Italian, privately in Manhattan. I have worked with students from a wide range of backgrounds, including many from the city's most competitive secondary schools, both public and private (incl. Stuyvesant, Trinity, Chapin, Bronx Science, Horace Mann, Dalton, and Fieldston), and at the university level (incl. Wellesley, Wesleyan, Fordham, Oberlin, Emory, NYU, and BU). My former SAT students have raised both their Reading and Writing scores by close to 200 points apiece, for a total of close to 400 points improvement, and my GRE students have raised their Verbal scores by as much as 150 points.
Recent college acceptances include Harvard*, Penn, Stanford, Duke, UC-Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Emory University*, NYU*, Washington University in St. Louis*, Bowdoin*, Vassar*, Middlebury, Oberlin, Kenyon*, Boston College*, Trinity College*, Brandeis University*, Mt. Holyoke*, Sarah Lawrence*, Skidmore, the University of Wisconsin-Madison*, and Boston University*. (Asterisk denotes 2011 acceptance).
For Prospective Students and Parents
I tutor both in person and via the Internet; if you are interested in setting up a session, please contact me at satverbaltutor@gmail.com. If you are contacting me from outside the New York City area, please be aware that my rates do reflect Manhattan pricing and may be higher than those offered by national chains such as Kaplan and Princeton Review.
For students looking for help with both Verbal and Math, I work in conjunction with Michael Kertes, an outstanding math tutor and certified teacher with an equally exceptional track record and more than 15 years of teaching experience. Together, we have succeeded in helping students raise their scores by over 500 points on the SAT, and we both have stellar references from families throughout the greater New York City area and beyond.
For more information, or if you are interested in setting up an appointment or a consultation, please email either me at satverbaltutor@gmail.com or Michael at mkertes@nyc.rr.com
Please provide scores from all previous sittings of the (P)SAT or PLAN/ACT as well as a list of schools to which you plan to apply (if known). Please do NOT send a list of classes you or your child has taken or scores from exams other than the SAT and ACT.
For Companies
For test-prep companies seeking feedback on their materials, I am available to review study guides, reading and/or writing questions, and mock-SAT and ACT Verbal exams. For more information and rates, please contact me at satverbaltutor@gmail.com
